∞ CHAPTER SIXTEEN ∞

Kaliko, Frogman, Lurline and Button chased after Eureka, but none of them could run like her. In a matter of moments she was completely out of sight. When they got to the tree line there was no sight of her, and Button breathing hard, tilted his head over to one side and closed his eyes. A few seconds later he pointed in the direction of one of the cabins, an isolated building close to the trees.

They caught a glimpse of Eureka as she slid in through the windowsill, but it was only a fraction of a second, and then she was gone. The patrolling guards were everywhere. There were several loitering within twenty feet of the building Eureka occupied. A minute later Button pointed, and they all could see her head peeking out of the window. She spotted the guards and her head disappeared back inside. Button saw her again, rounding the cabin on the far side, holding a stack of books with one hand/paw, and running on the other three. She was heading for the trees closest to the window she exited from, and was moving in a hurry.

Kaliko and the others proceeded to intercept Eureka on her way back around. Half way they stopped and listened for any sound to her progress, when she materialized next to them. Lurline visibly jumped and covered her mouth to hold back a yell.

"How do you do that? It's unnerving and makes my skin crawl."

Eureka pulled her lips back in a snarl and stuck out her tongue.

"I got the books. Let's go some place quiet and take a look."

"What books?" Frogman had a lost look on his face.

"The Oz books." It was obvious Eureka couldn't believe what she was hearing.

Frogman, not wanting it to be true was close to tears, but was beginning to put the pieces together.

"You're saying there's a Frogman in those books and Oscar made me to be like him?"

Lurline was shaking her head no and waving both hands to emphasize the sentiment.

"No, Frogman. What we're saying is all of us are in the books, and we were all made to be like those characters. Not just you. Eureka wants to confirm it, that's all. It doesn't change anything, we are still who we are no matter what Oscar tried to do. Different doesn't necessarily mean bad. In our case, it means we're stronger and better. Let's do what Eureka suggested and go take a look at what our creator had in mind for us."

The explosion was deafening, and Johnny nearly lost control of the truck as the concussion passed over the vehicle. The flash from the impact caused momentary blindness, and he applied the brakes as he inched over to where he thought the road ended. The sound of heavy breathing invaded that of the engine noises, and Johnny realized that his heart was beating hard and his hands were shaking uncontrollably.

Like a turbulent maelstrom, the wind whipped around the truck and threw debris against the windows.
